How to savor the time you have left…

This past weekend was both delightful and too short.

What is it about the waning days of summer that makes us savor and appreciate the time we have left?

It’s been a busy couple of weeks around here. First, my parents, who retired eight hours away in south Texas, came for a visit. We took advantage of the time and planned a meal with our kids and grandchildren.Summer days are about over. It’s always loud, messy, and a little rowdy. What else are family gatherings for if not to get a little rowdy?

Then, Grandson #1 had a double sleepover at Gigi and Pop’s right before he started kindergarten. {Someone hold me.}

We went to the zoo. We went to the movies and saw The Lion King. We had ice cream twice in one day. And I didn’t get a decent night’s sleep for two whole nights. But what a memorable end-of-summer time it was.Summer days are about over. How do you savor summer? What about family, rest, lack of routine? How to savor the time you have left...

Then, Daughter, Daughter-in-Law and I drove north to join other family gals for the summer experience of a lifetime. That sounds a little melodramatic when I read it back, but the description fits.

We are Okie gals…every last one of us, so a trip to Pawhuska, Oklahoma is no big deal. Or, we could have said that before ¹The Pioneer Woman came along and opened ²The Mercantile.

Though I’d been before, my girls had not. So, on what ended up being the hottest day of the summer, we planned a trip to Pawhuska. We had the most amazing day of laughter, wonderful food, retail therapy, and family.

How to savor time?

I’m talking about the waning days of summer, you know? It’s the season you feel like doing the things you never have time for, otherwise. Or, for doing nothing at all.

Is this why God created summer?

So, we’d slow down and smell the flowers…or at least take time to water them?

Did He know we’d gravitate outdoors in the summer, pull out the lawn chairs, and watch the kids ride their bikes or run through the sprinkler until the sun goes down?

It’s the days we escape to the beach or the mountains. It’s the local watermelon feast or peach festival, or the church’s annual summer picnic.

It’s stopping by the farmer’s market on a Saturday morning or loading everyone up to go for snow cones or ice cream. At least, that’s what we do around here on a hot, summer evening.

Those days are waning, now. Perhaps I don’t want to think about the fact there are only four months left in this year…and that the holidays are right around the corner.

So, I’m doing what I can to savor. We drove three hours to spend the day standing in a line for 1.5 hours so we could eat lunch at The Merc.

We roamed the streets of a quaint, Midwestern town on an afternoon when the feel-like temperature literally reached 112 degrees. We walked into some shops twice just so we could cool off. And they didn’t mind at all.

Let it happen. Roll with it. Enjoy it. Even swelter in it.

Trust me when I say this approach is a sign of my age. I’ve not always been so willing. I’m more of a hurry-er.

I’m trying to learn to savor and cherish. Honestly, I’m trying to do better at simply slowing down and enjoying this one life I’ve been given.

Does God have us here to bear His image and build His kingdom? Absolutely, but He’s also given us family and friends to do life with.

And He’s given us the summer – to slow down. To enjoy each other and the beauty of His creation. To refresh and rejuvenate. To grow and produce.

And to savor.

Side note: We got to meet Walter and the other dogs at The Lodge. How better to savor the waning days of summer than taking selfies with other people’s dogs. {Never-mind that they are celebrity-dogs.}
