2 ways to live above the *FRAY*…

Growing up had me surrounded by women who knew how to sew {and to trust}.

My grandmother and great-aunts were seamstresses for hire. This was how they earned income and helped to support their families.

My mom is a fantastic seamstress, as well. These days, it’s a lost art, but even I learned to sew {thanks to a year or two of home ec and my mom’s ever so patient help}.

Learning how to sew requires you understand something of the fabric.

Certain materials will fray more easily than others. When the fabric starts to ravel or come apart, that’s fraying. The threads begin to separate and no longer hold together the intended shape.

There are a lot of things coming apart in our world.

It’s easy to say I trust God, but putting it into practice is another thing entirely. Life happens and circumstances distract. We’re distracted from what we know is true or what we’ve been told – that we can trust God.

How to live above the *fray*?

#1 – Think on His sovereignty.

To say God is sovereign means He has unlimited power and independent authority over all. He is our Maker, Source, and Resource. There is no god or power above or besides our God.

When we begin to think about His sovereignty, we cannot help but be encouraged.

Lord, You have been our dwelling place and our refuge in all generations [says Moses]. Before the mountains were brought forth or ever You had formed and given birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting You are GodPsalm 90.1-2

Our faith becomes stronger when we focus on His role in our existence – and in all of the generations before us.

We can trust the One who gave birth to the earth and the world.

#2 – Think on His care.

Like a loving, earthly father cares for his children, the God of the universe cares for us. When we accept the gift of salvation, He adopts us into the family. We are recipients of His care.

The Creator of all things created YOU. He knit you together in your mother’s womb (Psalm 139.13) and knows everything about you. And He cares.

He sent His only son to die in your place, that you could have eternal life. By focusing on how much God cares for and loves you, the cares of this life fade into the background.

This is why I tell you: Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Matthew 6.25

This doesn’t mean our concerns or troubles disappear.

This is a real life we’re living, in a world filled with darkness and disappointments. As we keep our eyes on Jesus while doing life – as we trust Him – our perspective changes.

This is living above the *fray*.Do you have trust when things are unraveling or coming apart in your life? Here are 2 ways to live above the fray and maintain your trust.

While writing this post, I was suddenly reminded of my own fray-ful experience. It was almost two years ago that the very fabric of something so dear to me came crashing down.

The truth is I almost went down with it.

After some time months of anguish and weeping, God spoke to me through a family member. This loved one basically told me, “It’s time for you to get up!” I knew they were right – that I could no longer continue looking at the fray.

The time had come for me to get my eyes above the circumstances and on the goodness of God. I began to spend more time in His Word and in acknowledging His sovereignty over all things.

He reminded me of His loving, tender care for me. And that I could trust Him to lead me through to the other side. My part was to take a step and lift my eyes.

Is something unraveling around you?

Maybe it’s a separation happening within your own home and family, the loss of a job, or a devastating report from your doctor. Friend, it’s time for you to think on God’s sovereignty and to draw close to Him.

Do circumstances seem to no longer fit together or hold shape?

Begin to remind yourself of His loving, tender care. Allow yourself to get a glimpse of God’s purposes unfolding in a whole new way. And lift your eyes.

It’s time to start living above the fray…and to trust your sovereign God who cares.

  1. Oh, yes, Karlene! Keeping our eyes on Him and not the fray is so critical to holding onto hope. To holding onto joy. I love how you wove sewing through this story. Fabulous! Thank you, friend, for sharing this hope at #MomentsofHope!
