3 Ways to “Get More”

Ever feel like today’s #1 goal is to get more? The get more is everywhere we look, as if this will accomplish what is right and what we deserve.

  • More Stuff
  • More Access
  • More Position
  • More Exposure

And when that’s not enough, we want more followers and likes – more re-pins and re-tweets.

As a blogger, the get more mentality is something I’m encouraged to do daily. If you are promoting something, you know what I mean. Lately, I’ve been thinking about time – something else we crave more of. Don’t we all want to get more time?

But, what about the get more mentality of Jesus? When I say, “Jesus, make me more like you,” does this include how He handled time? There’s a lesson on time in the seventh chapter of John.

It was an important time on the Jewish calendar. The Feast of Tabernacles was about to take place. Jesus’ disciples were insisting He must go to The Feast.

They saw this as the perfect opportunity for Jesus to get more.

They said it was the chance to be seen and heard – more exposure, more access, more followers. Here was Jesus’ response.

…You go on. I’m not going to this festival, because my time has not yet come. John 7.8

Are you anxious for your time to come {to get more}?

If it feels you have waited well past the time for your get more to arrive, listen to this.

3 Ways to “Get More”

1 – There’s a time to GO.

Jesus replied, “Now is not the right time for me to go, but you can go anytime. John 7.6

This was a lesson for Jesus’ disciples and a lesson for us, today. We are here, as God’s representatives on earth, to GO and share the message of His love and mercy. You may have unclear details on some aspects of your life.

  • “God, what special thing have you called me to do?”
  • “I do not know if I’m supposed to accept that job offer, God.”

He may not spell out the specifics of what you are to do tomorrow, but you can always know what He has called you to today. We are called to GO and be His representatives. We get more by pointing others to Him.

2 – There’s a time to STAY.

Don’t wait for me. I’m not ready. It’s not the right time for me. John 7.8

Though we are called to always be sharing His love, there are times when God asks us to STAY.

  • If you do not have clear direction of where to go, then STAY put.
  • If you do not know what to say, then STAY silent.
  • If you do not know which decision is the right one, then STAY undecided.

We all have seasons of waiting. God may use this time to teach you. He may use the waiting to prepare someone or some place for you. By living close to the heart of the Father, Jesus knew what God was telling him to do.

Jesus was saying, “God has not released me to GO – yet.” We gain nothing by getting ahead of God. Use your STAY time to get more OF Him.

3 – There’s a time to REMAIN HIDDEN.

…he kept out of the way, careful not to draw attention to himself. John 7.10

There’s a time to STAY, but there is also a time to REMAIN HIDDEN. Remember, the way of Jesus is not the way of the world.

It is easy to be consumed with the get more. Whether for business purposes or personal satisfaction, or simply because everyone is doing it, today’s way of doing life screams get more.

Jesus went to the Feast after all, but He went alone. In verse 4, the disciples said, “You can’t become famous if you hide like this!”

Jesus slipped in the back door, quietly and without fanfare.

He did not go as the disciples wanted Him to. He was obedient to the Father. He recognized it was time to REMAIN HIDDEN.

Is the world in your head, screaming get more?

There are days when I want to run from it. I’m learning there are moments when God says, “Let it go.” The lists to check off, projects to complete, and a life to manage – it can wait if He says stay or remain hidden {or both}.

Feeling anxious or frustrated with the get more? Be willing to GO in love, STAY in obedience, and REMAIN HIDDEN in Him. I can confirm it’s a peaceful place to hang out.

  1. “Go in love, stay in obedience, and remain hidden in Him.” Love this, Karlene! There is hope in getting more of Jesus and not of the world. Thanks so much for sharing this at #MomentsofHope, my friend!

    Blessings and smiles,
    Lori

  2. What a refreshing perspective! 🙂 Right now it seems like the times are changing for me and my family. Like the places we are called to pour into and the things he wants us to focus on. It’s funny how something can seem so important during one season, and then all of a sudden God switches it on you. Blessings, Tasha (visiting from Moments of Hope)

    • So, your nest is being stirred, Tasha. I sure know that season! Praying you and your family will receive the confirmation you need – and that you will be released to “pour into” and “focus” as He intends, for His glory.

  3. Thanks for this post, Karlene. These are some great reminders for me. When I think about remaining hidden, I think about being hidden in Jesus, a wonderful place to be. Those are the times when I just need to really get more of Him. Thanks for sharing on Grace and Truth.

  4. Hi Karlene, I’m your neighbor at the #RaRaLinkup today! Your post is a timely reminder. It’s so easy to get caught up in the “get more” mentality of the world. But we need to “get more” of Jesus, don’t we? When we stay focused on Him we know when to go and when to stay, when to speak and when to be silent. And we aren’t sure, to just stay put and wait.

I pray that God will draw us close and as we keep our eyes on Him, that He will show us His way. Blessings to you!

  5. While this entire post is wonderful, #3 stood out to me as this has been something I have been thinking on for some time. Are we content, willing even, to stay hidden? Unseen? Doing those things the Lord has called us to do while remaining unnoticed? A very thought provoking post & I will be thinking on this today. Blessings!
