What I’m doing, reading, watching {Fall 2016}

As I sit here writing this post, the temperature on my weather app says 26 degrees and the feel like temp is 17. This we blame on the Oklahoma wind. And it’s not even Winter, yet.

With only six days until Fall officially ends, here’s a rundown of what’s been keeping me busy, entertaining me, and feeding my soul.

What I did this Fall…

Having just returned from a trip to the gulf coast of Alabama, I’m struggling with the cold weather here at home. This was not a trip I planned to make, but my favorite aunt invited me to ride along as she headed south for the month of December.

It became a personal, spiritual retreat.

Once we ate our way across Louisiana {including fresh beignets in New Orleans} I spent nine days hidden away in relative quiet. Sitting in the sun on the balcony, a pile of books beside me, the waves hitting the beach right in front of me, and Christmas music playing in the background was a grand way to reflect on 2016 and look toward the New Year.

This followed on the heels of an awesome Thanksgiving weekend with family. Now, I’m scrambling a bit to get Christmas stuff ready and send Mark off to visit his mother, who’s been in the hospital. I’ll meet up with him in Houston a few days before Christmas where we’ll spend the holiday with my parents.

Things are a little crazy now, but God is good and I feel especially blessed to be His daughter. Later, I plan to write a post on what I’ve learned this year.

What I read this Fall…

The Selfless Way of Christ:  Downward Mobility and the Spiritual Life, by Henri Nouwen. This tiny book impacted me to the core. It challenged everything I thought I knew about ambition, promotion, success, and humility.

Chasing the Sun, by Tracie Peterson. This, the first in a 3-part series by one of my favorite fictional authors, is a sweet story of family, love, and survival following the American civil war. You can get it FREE on Kindle {as of 12/16/16}.

What I’m still reading…

The Fringe Hours:  Making Time for You, by Jessica N. Turner. If you are struggling to manage house, home, family, work, and ministry {or any combination of the above} you may need this one. It offers practical help in finding and creating time for you.

Uninvited:  Living Loved When You Feel Less Than, Left Out, and Lonely, by Lysa Tereurst. The title basically clarifies who this book is for – and who of us has not felt at least some amount of one of those three emotions at some point in our life.

Water to Wine:  Some of My Story, by Brian Zahnd. This book is killing me – and I mean that in a good way, even if it is painful and God is using it to burn some stuff out of me. You’ll hear more from me on this one in the days to come.

What I’m re-reading now…

The Cost of Discipleship, by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. As my aunt recently said, “I have to read a small portion of Cost of Discipleship and let it marinate for a few days.” Exactly.

Grasping God’s Word:  A Hands-On Approach to Reading, Interpreting, and Applying the Bible, by J. Scott Duvall and J. Daniel Hays. Let me be clear – this is an actual textbook used in Bible exegesis courses at the college level. And it’s my absolute favorite resource for interpreting Scripture.

What was on my DVR this Fall…

Blue Bloods – My current fav drama series about a family serving their community in various roles of public service.

Chicago PD – I got started watching this one because it airs right after Law & Order SVU. Now I’m hooked.

Law & Order SVU – A long-time favorite of mine still running strong after eighteen seasons.

Chesapeake Shores – A Hallmark Channel original series about a multi-generational family and their real-life situations. Can’t wait for season two.

The Voice – Somehow, I survived the first season with Miley Cyrus as a coach {only because I fast-forwarded through her talking segments}.

Some favorite pins as of late…

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/88031367696219356/ – This song. Once I listen to it, I know I’m going to hit repeat at least three times. Wow!

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/88031367694082641/ – If I’ve shared this before, I’m sorry. But seriously, THIS is the best low-carb pizza crust EVER!
