His kingdom come…on earth

What on earth is happening?

When you watch the news or see the latest tweets, maybe your response is something like mine. What on earth?

We need change, that’s what we need. Yes, we must have change.

But what change will fix it? A new president? Tougher gun laws? Law enforcement with greater compassion? Young men with more respect for law enforcement? Strong family values? Less prejudice toward skin color, culture, lifestyle, economic status or past mistakes? What is it that we need?

Our Father in heaven… YOUR KINGDOM COMEyour will be done, ON EARTH as it is in heaven. – Matthew 6.9-10

I want to share what happened with me this morning, but first let me explain. I am Grandma to two little boys. Both their birth moms gave a great gift. Our son and daughter-in-law accepted a great responsibility.

As with all of our children and grandchildren, these little boys are on loan to our family from God. Their beautiful, all-boy faces are black. Ours are white. Their presence in our family has changed us – for the better; forever.

Some might say I’m obviously caught in the in-between of the tragic events of recent months (and, really, the past year) in our country. This morning, God said to me, “Oh, no. You aren’t in-between. You are right in the middle of it.”

Then, I stretched out both of my hands in prayer and cried out, “My Father in heaven…” because this is what I do every morning, and this is how I say it. “MY Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come…”

“Your kingdom come. Your kingdom come…on earth…on earth…”

It’s what we need. It is our hope.

This is our hope, today. His kingdom come… on earth. Yes, we hope in our salvation. Yes, we hope in the return of Jesus. Yes, we have hope in heaven, our eternal home.

  • Until then, our hope is His kingdom be increased here on earth. Today.
  • Until then, our hope is we be made more into His image…His image bearers here on earth. Today.
  • Until then, our hope is we be humbly used by Him…building His kingdom here on earth. Today.

Are you struggling to make sense of it all?

In our humanness, we must stop trying. We cannot understand on our own, but through His Spirit we see that Light outshines darkness. It has and it always will. And in the end, the Light of the world will set up His kingdom here …on earth. Until that day, His kingdom is here. In you. In me.

His kingdom is here. In you. In me. #kingdom come #onearth Click To Tweet

As His kingdom increases = more unity. As His kingdom bearers bear His image = less violence. As His kingdom believers are humbly used = people come together in love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Gal. 5.22-23).

As you pray, Your kingdom come…on earth, you are saying, “God, may Your kingdom come – into my life, home and family. Your kingdom come – into my work, worship and relationships. Your kingdom come – into my neighborhood, my city and my country.”

Concerned about what's happening in our world? Change is necessary. His kingdom come on earth. This is the only answer. He is our help.

We’re right in the middle of it – you and me.

Like it or not, as Kingdom residents, we are right in the middle of it. This is our place in time. These are our people. We’re in it together.

Not only is His kingdom come…on earth what we need, it is His very will. God’s desire is for all people to know Him; to come into the kingdom.

And only when we come into the kingdom, do we (any of us) have a hope of seeing the fruit of the spirit flow out of us [which is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control].

Only then can we possibly teach it to our children and grandchildren. Only then can we hope to see His kingdom grow. Only then can we hope to see change.

“This, then, is how you should pray…

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6.9-10)

O God, you have taught me to keep all your commandments by loving you and my neighbor: Grant me the grace of your Holy Spirit, that I may be devoted to you with my whole heart, and united to others with pure affection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (The Divine Hours: Prayers for Summertime)

His kingdom come…on earth {it’s what we need}

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6.8)

  1. Yes, we need His kingdom here, on earth, now. Thank you for being part of that kingdom. I do have hope. Lord, have mercy on us all. Thanks for sharing this, Karlene!
